Rolling Stone – The Case for Obama

The charges are familiar: He’s a compromiser who hasn’t stood up to the GOP or Wall Street. But a look at his record reveals something even more startling – a truly historic presidency.

There’s a percentage of america that is too busy for politics.
They get the 30 second sound bits, or the “angry” gop, or the confused and angry tea party.

What many don’t see, is that Obama’s doing exactly what he said he’d do.
He’s got the best record of keeping campaign promises in our history – and we’re only half way through his first term.

If america was paying attention, there would be no way the foxpublican tea party would gain seats next week.
The majority voted for Obama, but apparently many don’t realize that the republican party has stood in the way of EVERYTHING we voted for.

This article rightly describes republicans as ” an opposition party bent on obstruction at any price.”

For those of you who say – but what about the supermajority?
Al Franken wasn’t sworn in until the summer of 2009. 6 months later, Scott Brown was elected and the supermajority was ended.
The supermajority included moderate republican, arlen spectre.
The supermajority included joe lieberman, who campaigned for mccain.
The supermajority included many conservative democrats, such as ben nelson.

The article points out that both LBJ and FDR had more favorable congresses.

“What’s even more impressive about Obama’s accomplishments, historians say, is the fractious political coalition he had to marshal to victory. “He didn’t have the majority that LBJ had,” says Goodwin. Indeed, Johnson could count on 68 Democratic senators to pass Medicare, Medicaid and the Voting Rights Act. For his part, Franklin Roosevelt had the backing of 69 Senate Democrats when he passed Social Security in 1935. At its zenith, Obama’s governing coalition in the Senate comprised 57 Democrats, a socialist, a Republican turncoat — and Joe Lieberman.”
