With and without PAYGO, the deficit has increased dramatically since Pelosi became speaker, under both Presidents Bush and Obama.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office’s November monthly budget review contains a chart that shows the deficit steadily climbed from $161 billion in 2007 to $459 billion in 2008, and peaked at $1.4 trillion in 2009. By that year, the deficit represented 10 percent of GDP — the highest level since 1945. It was $1.3 trillion, or 8.9 percent of GDP, in fiscal year 2010 — the second highest since 1945.
As the numbers show, the speaker can take credit for spending more money on education, veterans, small business tax credits and other programs, but she can’t also take credit for “restoring fiscal discipline.”
There are several issues with that post.
1. It completely ignores that the BIGGEST elements of the deficit were implemented BEFORE PELOSI became speaker.
– bush tax cuts
– wars (not included in bush’s deficit estimates)
– medicare expansion
Their “Fact check” seems to want to blame Pelosi for things passed before she was speaker and/or for the recession that began in 2008.
If that is the goal of the “fact check” I would like them please explain which of those policies she forced on GWB that brought about the recession.
2. Bush’s $459 billion estimate for FY 2008 did not include the wars, amt adjustment, etc – it’s a fictional number.
Yahoo.com is literally swamped with dumb people, parroting right wing talking points.
Its the new AOL.
On yahoo answers, we are treated with 90%+ garbage questions, asked repeatedly.
For example, there’s the right’s big 200 million dollar / day lie which ended up on more than half a million websites within a day or two (the right wing lie machine is huge).
These are a portion the questions I bothered to answer, and ALL of these came AFTER the lie had been massively rejected. If you bother to click through to this crap, you’ll notice some of them are basically the same question, from the same person asking.
Propaganda? Probably, what other reason is there to continue repeating a lie.
Yahoo answers supports these lies.
Its a pile of trash.
This morning, Bloomberg reporter Drew Armstrong broke an incredible story revealing that health insurance companies, like UnitedHealth and CIGNA, funneled $86.2 million into the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 2009 to pay for the Chamber’s multifaceted campaign to kill President Obama’s health reform legislation.
I’ve tried to care about this show.
Unfortunately, I seem to be falling into the Bourne trap.
Every time I try to watch the Event I end up falling asleep.
I’m not sure why that is, but obviously I haven’t grown attached to the main characters.
The pace doesn’t seem fast, but a lot has happened:
– plane disappear
– passengers die
– passengers come back to life
– now dying again
I assume I’m supposed to care.
I lost interest in writing about the event.
If it improves, maybe I’ll finish this.
I’m starting to care a little bit.
The show must be improving.
Or my standards are rapidly lowering.
How stupid are conservatives? They think the deficit has grown under Obama. Can you believe that? 1.2 trillion before Obama to half that amount this year means the deficit is growing to mentally ill conservatives. Conservatives have exclusive ownership of the idiot gene.
